Star Citizen Food & Drink Survival Guide (2026)

Everything about the hunger and thirst mechanics, where to find sustenance across the verse, and effects of different consumables.

Updated: 5/10/2026

TL;DR: Your character has two survival meters — a blue hydration bar and a green nutrition (hunger) bar, visible via F1 → Character status. Both deplete over time, faster during strenuous activity. Mild depletion just reduces stamina; severe depletion causes vision blur, disorientation, and eventually unconsciousness. Always carry water and nutrition bars in your personal inventory. Eat and drink before long missions — vending machines are at every major station and city.

The Hunger & Thirst System

Open F1 → Character tab to see your status. The meters deplete slowly in normal gameplay and faster when running, fighting, or in extreme temperatures.

Dehydration Effects

  • Mild: Slightly increased stamina drain.
  • Moderate: Blurred vision, elevated heart rate indicator.
  • Severe: Disorientation, movement penalties, risk of unconsciousness.

Hunger Effects

  • Mild: Reduced stamina recovery speed.
  • Moderate: Reduced carry capacity, slower sprint recovery.
  • Severe: Health deterioration, potential incapacitation.

Food & Drink Types

Beverages

  • Water: Best hydration-to-inventory ratio. No side effects. Always carry 2–3.
  • Coffee: Hydration plus a temporary stamina boost.
  • Energy Drinks: Strong immediate hydration and stamina boost, followed by a crash. Use for emergencies.
  • Alcohol: Minimal hydration. Temporary impairment of motor functions and vision — avoid in combat situations.

Food

  • Nutrition Bars: Best nutrition-to-space ratio. Portable, cheap, reliable. The standard survival item.
  • Fast Food (BigBenny's, etc.): Good saturation, quick to eat, moderate cost. Available at most city food courts.
  • Burritos: Best overall value — fills both hunger and provides some hydration. Widely available.
  • Specialty foods: Some provide temporary buffs (e.g., BigBenny's Special for health regen, Sea Urchin for temperature resistance).

Where to Find Food & Drink

  • Space stations: Vending machines in common areas. Food courts at Port Tressler, Everus Harbor, Baijini Point, and others.
  • New Babbage: Wally's Bar and the Commons food court.
  • Area18: G-Loc Bar, food stands throughout the Plaza level.
  • Lorville: Worker's District food vendors.
  • Orison: Cloud View Center restaurants.
  • Outposts: Most have at least one vending machine — stock up before leaving a major city, since outposts may run out.

Survival Strategy

  • Always carry at minimum: 2 water bottles and 4 nutrition bars in your personal inventory.
  • Stock your ship: Before long cargo or exploration runs, buy a stack of consumables at a city. Outpost prices are higher.
  • Don't eat/drink in rapid succession: Consuming too many items at once reduces effectiveness and can trigger negative status effects.
  • Check status before missions: F1 → Character — if either bar is below 50%, eat and drink before heading out.
